chat_bubble WMSPL Power Rankings - Week 17

It's clinching week, people! The rankings are including "best case" and "most likely" scenarios for all the teams heading into the playoff tournament in a few weeks. For some teams, "best case" isn't a very good case at all.

#1. A's
(Rank last week: 1)
Record: 29-4-3 (4-1-0 this week)
1st place in the President's Division (1st overall in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: The A's can clinch the President's Division and the #1 overall seed for the playoff tournament by winning out.
MOST LIKELY: Precisely that. Anything else could be classified as an epic collapse for the A's, who have been the league's best team for most of the season.

#2. Broadway
(Rank last week: 3)
Record: 27-7-2 (3-1-0 this week)
3rd place in the President's Division (3rd in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Broadway is locked into the #3 seed going into the playoffs. They can't be caught from below, and they simply ran out of games needed to catch Storm for #2.
MOST LIKELY: #3.

#3. Storm
(Rank last week: 2)
Record: 29-6-1 (3-1-0 this week)
2nd place in the President's Division (2nd overall in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Storm can still win the President's Division and enter the playoffs as the #1 seed, and their fate is in their hands.
MOST LIKELY: Storm wins their next game, but loses to the A's to end the regular season and finish 2nd. At least, that's probably what most of the league hopes happens.

#4. Falcons
(Rank last week: 4)
Record: 20-14-1 (3-1-0 this week)
1st place in the Vice President's Division (4th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: The Falcons lead the VP Division by 3 games over the Rebels, and trail Broadway by 7 games for the #3 seed. The #4 spot and a VP Division Championship cheque is the best they can hope for.
MOST LIKELY: #4. The Falcons magic number to clinch the VP division is 1. They have a date against the Rebels on Tuesday followed immediately by Hanet in a rare rain-induced weekday doubleheader. They close against Brew Crew. The Falcons should win one of these games, but this is the Falcons we're talking about, so all 3 Falcons fans will be on the edge of their seats until it's all settled. They can even still be caught by SI Play for the #4 seed! SI has a tough schedule remaining so the odds are in the Falcons' favour. Again, that's meaningless because we're talking about the Falcons here.

#5. SI Play
(Rank last week: 4)
Record: 17-16-1 (2-2-0 this week)
4th place in the President's Division (5th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: SI can't win their division, but could catch the Falcons for the #4 seed and a coveted Friday bye in the playoff tournament.
MOST LIKELY: Here's where things get murky in the seeding for the playoffs. SI would need to win all of their games for the rest of the season and hope the Falcons go 1-2 to finish up. SI has the league's hottest team, Surge, up first, then dates against Hanet, Broadway and the Rebels to finish up. They only lead the Rebels by a half-game for the #5 seed, and the Rebels have a bit of an easier schedule to end it. Rebels at SI Play on Monday September 10th could be a game to decide seeding, which would be awesome. But SI is most likely to finish in the #6 position.

#6. Rebels
(Rank last week: 4)
Record: 17-17-0 (0-3-0 this week)
2nd place in the Vice President's Division (6th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: The Rebels could win the Vice President's Division and go into the playoffs in the #4 spot if they win out and get some help.
MOST LIKELY: #5, and the corresponding bump up to the President's Division in 2019. See the entry for SI Play for my rationale.

#7. Hanet Plastics
(Rank last week: 9)
Record: 12-20-3 (3-2-0 this week)
5th place in the President's Division (7th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Exactly where they are. They can't catch the Rebels for #6, and will be demoted to the VP division in 2019.
MOST LIKELY: They can be caught from below, however. They only lead Brew Crew and Coulas by a half-game and could fall as low as the #9 seed. But based on their remaining schedule and the remaining schedules of Brew Crew and Coulas, Hanet will enter the playoff as the #7 seed and be placed in a very winnable pool with the Falcons, whom they've owned all season, and either the Rebels or SI Play.

#8. Brew Crew
(Rank last week: 9)
Record: 13-22-1 (2-1-0 this week)
3rd place in the Vice President's Division (tied for 8th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: With some luck, Brew Crew could finish in 7th. They'll do battle in the VP division in 2019.
MOST LIKELY: Brew Crew finishes their season with games against Broadway and the Falcons, and with Coulas' schedule just as difficult, Brew Crew should enter the playoffs in the #8 seed.

#9. Surge
(Rank last week: 12)
Record: 9-26-0 (4-0-0 this week)
Tied for 5th place in the Vice President's Division (Tied for 11th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Best? Surge, the WMSPL's hottest team and winners of 4 straight, could "win" themselves right into 10th place and lose out on the bonus ringer pick in next year's draft.
MOST LIKELY: With two games remaining against the suddenly struggling Re/Max, and Bollocks having two tough ones, Surge is probably going to end the season in 10th place.

#10. Coulas Bone Crushers
(Rank last week: 8)
Record: 12-21-3 (0-4-0 this week)
6th place in the President's Division (Tied for 8th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Coulas could turn things around and finish as high as 7th place. They'll be relegated to the VP Division in 2019.
MOST LIKELY: They'd need to beat the Rebels and Hanet to do it, so it looks like 9th it is. They'll get to pick from the under-40 list in next year's draft.

#11. Re/Max Crossroads
(Rank last week: 7)
Record: 9-26-0 (0-4-0 this week)
Tied for 5th place in the Vice President's Division (Tied for 11th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Re/Max could finish as high as 10th place
MOST LIKELY: They won't.

#12. Bollocks
(Rank last week: 11)
Record: 10-25-1 (0-4-0 this week)
4th place in the Vice President's Division (10th in WMSPL)

BEST CASE: Bollocks' recent 8 game losing streak has put them in 10th place, and that's the best they can hope for.
MOST LIKELY: 11th place, probably, and a ringer pick in the draft next year.
