chat_bubble 2019 WMSPL Power Rankings - Week 7

It's officially summer! And the weather is improving! The WMSPL hasn't had a permit pulled in almost two weeks! Games are being played and favourites are being established. Surge is looking forward to 2020. You want a hot take? I know you do. Surge isn't the "worst" team in this league. They're just the most unfortunate. This here column predicts that Surge won't even finish the season as the 12-seed going into the playoff tournament. Good thing nothing on the internet is permanent, and this prediction will disappear as quickly as Re/Max's Drew's porn-stache.

#1. STORM
(2-0-0 This Week; 10-0-1 Overall; 1st in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 1)

Finally, some controversy over at team Storm. In case you hadn't noticed lately, Storm's recaps had been getting shorter and shorter. Whatever motivated their regular recap writer to take the job (default?), that motivation has diminished... UNTIL THIS WEEK! The regular guy needed a day off for some reason, and lo, a star has shone bright upon Storm's website. Go ahead and read the recap from their game this week against IG Wealth, and tell me the regular guy shouldn't be afraid for his job. "That's ridiculous," I can hear you saying in your head (I live rent-free in your head). "The regular guy isn't afraid that some one-off recap is going to get him fired!" Oh yeah? Check out the recap he wrote RIGHT AFTER THE HANET GAME. Text! Lots of it! Humourous observations! There's finally a rivalry involving Storm, and it's INTERNAL! Count me in on Team New Guy, because I love to stir up shit.

#2. REBELS
(4-0-0 This Week; 8-3-1 Overall; 2nd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 5)

The Rebels are a force! They played four games this week and swept 'em, and are now right behind Storm at the top of the President's Division. Jose (Jose-Jose-Jose) is in the running for the league's home run title (and therefore, the WMSPL MVP trophy that goes with it), and they're showing no signs of slowing down.

#3. A'S
(4-0-0 This Week; 8-4-0 Overall; Tied for 3rd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 7)

The A's jump 4 spots in this week's rankings on the back of their 4-0 perfect week. Luige leads the league in home runs and is shooting for his second straight MVP award. The A's are also employing some intimidation tactics PRE-GAME, having four-year-strong Past President George loom over the home team's placement of the bases. It's a mental edge that cannot be denied.

#4. HANET PLASTICS
(1-1-0 This Week; 5-3-1 Overall; 1st in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 4)

Hanet stays put in the four-slot, and continues to lead the Vice President's Division with an eye on moving back up in 2020. They're undefeated in their own division, but winless versus the President's Division. Time (and games) will tell whether that's a trend, or merely luck.

#5. BREW CREW
(2-1-0 This Week; 7-7-0 Overall; 2nd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 8)

The walk-up music is helping, obviously. Brew Crew is coming on strong now, only a game back of the VP Division lead. If they add a PA announcer (maybe one of the Buffers?), watch out!

#6. FALCONS
(1-3-0 This Week; 9-5-1 Overall; Tied for 3rd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)

A precipitous drop for the Falcons this week, because they're playing like crap. They suffered their first 3-game losing streak of the season, and even though they ended it with a decisive victory over Coulas, they've shown signs that another 3+ game losing streak isn't that far off. With the return of The Mattural to the line up, maybe now they won't have such issues scoring runs and those 1-run defeats will turn into multiple-run victories.

#7. BROADWAY
(1-3-0 This Week; 8-6-1 Overall; 5th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 3)

Speaking of slumps: Broadway. After losing both ends of Friday's doubleheader against the A's and Rebels (just like the Falcons), they lost their next game by default. And again just like the Falcons, they finished the week with a win over a VP Division foe. This is what happens when you can't consistently get your best out to play.

#8. COULAS BONE CRUSHERS
(1-2-0 This Week; 5-9-0 Overall; Tied for 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 9)

What is Coulas? They made it all the way to the playoff tournament final game in 2018, but have come out flat this season. They've beaten a team from the President's Division, which is more than can be said for their division leaders.

#9. REMAX CROSSROADS
(1-2-0 This Week; 4-8-0 Overall; Tied for 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 10)

After losing a heartbreaker to Brew Crew on Sunday in game one of their doubleheader, Re/Max Re/Grouped and destroyed Coulas in game two. That followed with a Tuesday night loss to the Rebels where Drew had such a terrible night at the plate that he jumped at the chance for some free BP against the Falcons on Wednesday when he played for Coulas. Well, after farting his way through that game, he was not please with how his BP went. Their fortunes may turn this weekend, when they play two straight games against Surge on Friday and again on Sunday.

#10. IG WEALTH
(0-2-0 This Week; 3-6-2 Overall; 6th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 6)

Disappointing week for IG Wealth, getting thumped by Storm (who hasn't been?), then losing to Greenthumb by a single run. IG is staring down a gauntlet this weekend, beginning with a date with Storm Friday, then a doubleheader against the Rebels and A's on Sunday. A win in one of those games should make the weekend a success.

#11. GREENTHUMB
(1-1-0 This Week; 3-6-0 Overall; 5th(?) in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 11)

Greenthumb has only played 9 games, so calculating how far back from the division leader they are is difficult since the teams in between have played almost 50% more games. They could be as high as 2nd in the division based on winning percentage!

#12. SURGE
(0-3-0 This Week; 0-13-0 Overall; 6th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 12)

Frustration reigns in Surgeland. Things will turn around. My predictions are NEVER WRONG.
