chat_bubble 2019 WMSPL Power Rankings - Week 15

The end of the regular season is fast approaching, and with it the WMSPL Playoff Tournament, the crown jewel of the league (even though it's WAY WAY harder to win a division than either tournament, but I digress). In this week's rankings, keep an eye out to see how often (or infrequently) each team has celebrated under the champagne shower.

The week started off simply spectacularly, if you're any team but Storm: The A's pummeled the 4-time defending President's Division champs, scoring 39 runs in only 4 innings. The A's were investigated by CAS after that spanking. The A's are clearly making the statement that they HAVE NOT conceded the division just yet, despite the odds clearly not being in their favour to catch the leaders.

#1. A'S
(4-0-0 This Week; 23-9-0 Overall; 2nd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 5)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2013, 1995
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: -
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2003, 1995

After having been dropped to 5th in last weeks rankings, the A's got mad, obviously. They've been playing like a dog on fire lately (yes, I know the expression is 'house on fire', but dog on fire is definitively funnier), having won their last 5 games. They've scored A HUNDRED AND TWO runs in their last FOUR games, 40% of that coming against last week's #1 team, Storm. They're 4 games back of the #1 playoff seed and their very first ever President's Division Championship.

#2. FALCONS
(2-0-0 This Week; 20-10-1 Overall; 4th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 3)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 1983
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2014, 2011, 2010
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2018, 1998

The Falcons have won 8 of their last 9 games, with a frustrating loss right in the creamy middle to prevent a free beer night. They trail Storm by 7 games in the loss column with 7 games to play, so their best hope is to land the #2 seed going into the playoffs. The picture will become far clearer after their doubleheader this coming Sunday when they host Storm and IG Wealth.

#3. BROADWAY
(1-1-0 This Week; 21-9-1 Overall; 3rd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2015, 1999, 1993
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: -
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2015, 2004

Broadway took a hard loss to the Falcons on Sunday, but rebounded nicely against Hanet on Tuesday. The A's have kicked them out of the driver's seat for the #2 playoff seed, so with only seven games to go they'll need a good, long winning streak to get it back.

#4. REBELS
(2-1-0 This Week; 19-12-1 Overall; 5th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 4)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2018, 2004, 2003, 1992, 1991
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2005, 2003, 2000, 1999, 1993, 1992
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2007

The Rebels are getting back to their (surprisingly) historic winning ways! Who knew they were such a decorated franchise? The Rebels, that's who. Six-time President's Division champs, five-time playoff champs. They started the week with wins over Coulas and IG Wealth, but took a step back on Monday, relying on call-ups and losing to Re/Max. They're still very much in the hunt for a Friday night bye in the playoff tournament.

#5. STORM
(1-1-0 This Week; 26-3-1 Overall; 1st in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 1)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2017, 2016, 1994, 1986
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2009, 2007, 1995, 1984
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2012

You give up 39 runs in one game, you drop in the power rankings. Storm still sits comfortably in the driver's seat for the President's Division title, which will be their sixth this decade, tying them for the most President's Division championships in one calendar-decade with Hanet, who also won six titles in the 90's.

#6. BREW CREW
(2-2-0 This Week; 16-16-0 Overall; 1st in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 6)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2014, 1998, 1997
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2012
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2014, 2008, 1996

The WMSPL's Even-Stevens went 2-2 this week to keep their overall record at .500, still good enough a too-close-for-comfort 1.5 game lead in the Vice President's Division over Re/Max. My prediction is that if they maintain this .500 record over the last four weeks of the season, it'll be enough for the division title.

#7. RE/MAX CROSSROADS
(2-0-0 This Week; 13-16-2 Overall; 2nd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 9)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2011, 1990
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2004
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2016, 2001

Re/Max, content to watch Hanet slip down the standings, are the eager recipients of 2nd place in the Vice President's Division! And like any sex move that requires a trapeze, this position won't be easy to maintain without some work. Their lead over Hanet is only a half-game, and Hanet has a game in hand.

#8. HANET PLASTICS
(1-3-0 This Week; 12-16-2 Overall; 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 8)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2012
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 1998, 1997, 1996, 1994, 1991, 1990
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2011, 2006

Hanet only won one of their 4 games this week, and even then it was by default. Hanet is absolutely the team that screams "Regular season doesn't matter now, like it did in the 90's! Everyone makes the playoffs!", then, they wreck the dreams of multiple teams in the tournament.

#9. IG WEALTH
(1-2-0 This Week; 10-18-2 Overall; 6th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 7)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2010, 2002, 2001, 1984
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2008, 2002, 2001, 1985, 1984
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2017, 2010

IG Wealth lost two games this week by default.

#10. COULAS BONE CRUSHERS
(1-3 This Week; 9-23-0 Overall; Tied for 4th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 12)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2009, 1989, 1988, 1985
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 1989, 1988, 1987
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2013, 2005

Coulas has lost 14 of their last 16 games.

#11. SURGE
(0-3-0 This Week; 4-27-0 Overall; 6th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 11)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2000
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: -
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2000

Surge averaged more than 15 runs per game this week, but had the misfortune to step in front of the A's runaway truck twice. At least they showed up.

#12. GREENTHUMB
(1-2-0 This Week; 7-21-2 Overall; Tied for 4th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 11)

WMSPL PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005
PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2006
VICE PRESIDENT'S DIVISION CHAMPIONS: 2009, 2002

Greenthumb split their doubleheader on Sunday, but unfortunately couldn't find 6 rostered players to play on Tuesday.
