chat_bubble 2019 WMSPL Power Rankings - Week 19

It's playoff weekend! The rain on Friday notwithstanding, it looks like a great few days for ball. Who's going to win the tournament?

This is the season finale for the WMSPL Power Rankings. We'll be back next year.

Thanks for reading.

#1. HANET PLASTICS
(2-0-0 This Week; 19-17-2 Overall; Vice President's Division Champions)
(Rank last week: 5)

Here's a topic of discussion for the comments section: How much does MOMENTUM matter going into the playoff tournament? This weeks rankings have a lot to do with the momentum with which the teams will go into the weekend. Is the team that gets hottest late in the season the favourite to win it all? Hanet would like to prove it to you: They won the Vice President's division and ended the season on a 5-game winning streak, overtaking a Brew Crew, er, crew, who had previously been sitting in first for a good, long while. As usual, Hanet will have all their best players available, ready to pounce on any unsuspecting team that forgets what a powerhouse they really are.

#2. FALCONS
(1-0-0 This Week; 26-11-1 Overall; 3rd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)

The Falcons go into playoff weekend, riding a 3-game winning streak, and winning the winner-take-3rd game on Sunday over Broadway where it was REALLY OBVIOUS both teams wanted that win. The win by the Falcons (instead of being happy with a tie, like the A's George wanted), forced the A's to actually come to the park and play to try to beat Storm, which they did, even though Storm's heart didn't really seem to be into it. Now that I've put the Falcons so high on this list, expect them to be out of the playoffs by Saturday afternoon.

#3. BROADWAY
(0-1-0 This Week; 25-12-1 Overall; 4th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)

Broadway played a fantastic game on Sunday, holding the Falcons to only 6 runs, and holding the lead until the 6th inning. The baseball gods will reward effort come playoff time.

#4. A'S
(1-0-0 This Week; 27-11-0 Overall; 2nd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)

The A's won on Sunday to clinch the #2 seed. Perhaps you're thinking "Hey, dumbass, you just said that momentum would dictate the rankings! Yet here you have Broadway, who lost, above the mighty A's, who won!" To that I would respond "Listen, Jomo, you guys beat Storm, who though they showed up, they didn't really show up... you know? Broadway-Falcons was a classic, Storm-A's was not."

#5. STORM
(0-2-0 This Week; 31-6-1 Overall; President's Division Champions)
(Rank last week: 1)

Storm went into Sunday's doubleheader having not played for almost two weeks, thanks to a default win over Greenthumb. And the rust was evident, at least in the late game (which I attended, live-tweeting it to the Falcons' 18 followers on Twitter). Does wrapping up your playoff seed so early make you complacent going into the playoffs? Storm, the Rebels, Greenthumb and Coulas' fate was sealed weeks ago. We'll find out on Sunday if that means anything.

#6. IG Wealth
(2-0-0 This Week; 15-21-2 Overall; 6th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 8)

The Iggies swept their Sunday season finale doubleheader to "steal" the 8-seed from Re/Max and avoid a date with the A's in the round-robin portion of the playoff tournament.

#7. REBELS
(1-0-0 This Week; 21-15-2 Overall; 5th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 6)

The Rebels lost their season finale but their playoff prospects look good. They're in a pool with the Falcons, whom they dominated this season, and IG Wealth, against whom they played to an even 2-2 record.

#8. BREW CREW
(1-0-0 This Week; 19-19-0 Overall; 2nd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 8)

Guess what? Brew Crew finished the season 19-19, a .500 record. This fate was foretold weeks ago, and lo, it came to pass.

#9. COULAS BONE CRUSHERS
(1-0-0 This Week; 11-27-0 Overall; 4th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 10)

Can Coulas repeat their miracle run from last year's playoff tournament? They're in a pool with Storm, who are coming in flat, and Greenthumb, who may or may not show up to play.

#10. RE/MAX CROSSROADS
(0-1-0 This Week; 14-21-3 Overall; 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 9)

Re/Max laid an egg against Brew Crew on Sunday and will enter the playoffs on a 3-game losing streak.

#11. SURGE
(0-1-0 This Week; 5-32-1 Overall; 6th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 12)

If I'm Surge's team rep, I'm looking VERY CAREFULLY at the 2020 draft list when I'm making my Horse's Ass pick.

#12. GREENTHUMB
(0-2-0 This Week; 7-28-3 Overall; 5th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 11)

Greenthumb enters the playoffs with the league's most negative momentum, riding a 7-game losing streak.
