assignment Time Limit Sinks Falcons in Loss to A's
Sunday 6:30PM August 28th, 2022
In a back and forth affair, the Falcons ran into the dreaded WMSPL time limit, losing the finale of their season series vs the A’s, 21-19.

The Falcons came in refreshed, having “won” their early Sunday game thanks to a default-prone Hanet outfit that could not convince the A’s, Storm or the ump to let them play with any pickups aged 1-90 and able to stand on their own that would suffice for a minimum 8-man squad.

And, in keeping Falcons tradition alive, they kicked off this game with a *fart noise*, *fart noise*, walk, *fart noise*, putting to rest any notion that a well-rested team has an advantage over one playing the back end of a tough doubleheader.

The A’s, in turn, did what they do in the 1st—a Luigi grand slam and a (wood bat!) Travis HR staked them to an early 6-0 lead. Goliath had seen enough of the dilly-dallying, and in the 2nd he launched his own 3-run shot to put the Falcons on the board. 7 batters later and the Falcons hit the MAX6 to tie the game early. The A’s responded with 3 of their own to lead 9-6 after 2.

In the 3rd, a Beatty single, back-to-back doubles by Dunner and Poutine, and a string of hits down the bottom of the order scored 4, giving the Falcons their first lead of the game, 10-9. All of their one fan in attendance (Mrs. MDB!) would have cheered if they weren’t watching TikTok videos instead.

The A’s posted their 2nd MAX6, followed by a Beatty bomb to the playground and Falcons 5-spot to tie the game at 15 after 4. With time becoming a premium, the Falcons quickly plated 4 more and capped by a rare 2-run sac fly by Dunner (with Barry Guerrero Jr motoring from 2nd, hangover be damned) to give the visitors a 19-16 lead after 5 innings.

The Falcons went down in order in the top of the 6th, and hoped their 3 run lead would be enough against the bottom of the A’s lineup. But good teams find a way to score, and indeed the A’s did: Larry singled, and Doug burned the Falcons outfield with a huge double to the wall before turning the lineup over. In the end, 5 A’s plated to restore a 21-19 A's lead heading into the 7th.

With 8 minutes to go, the Falcons did their best speedrun through the lineup, sending 10 sweaty bodies to the plate in 6 minutes and scoring 4 to take a 23-21 lead. The ump signalled 2 min left, and a casual Jomo at-bat/pinch runner sub ate up the rest of the damn time. The score reverted to the 6th, the A’s walked away with the win, and the Falcons enjoyed a PizzaCo stack of delicious pies as their not-so-comforting consolation prize.

Game notes: Goliath did max damage before being scratched in the 4th to nurse a lower body injury (and not of the Cowboy kind), notching a HR and 4 RBIs… both teams rightfully lodged complaints regarding Poutine’s brand new shiny white Nike Moon cleats that were more blinding than the pesky sunset… With his 4th inning HR, Beatty reclaims the WMSPL HR lead at 23 with 2 games to go… Beatty also kept his intentional walk streak going as the A’s tried to save any more Hot Dots from whizzing by the jungle gym… kudos to Triple Play for watching from the LF bleachers on an off day… the Falcons will finish 2022 with 0.500 or better records against every team except the A’s, who completed the season series sweep vs. the Falcons (as they have against many others).
