assignment An Inauspicious Start

On a miserable WMSPL Opening Day Friday, Broadway danced in the rain all over the Falcons in a 20-12 romp that wasn't as close as the score would suggest.

After a long off-season rest, 60% of the Falcons answered the bell for opening day, and the sign-out sheet looked like the next entry into the Falcons hall of fame: No Million Dollar Bill, No Teets, No Dunner, No Goliath, No Grahambo, No Miner Leaguer. So Cowboy, Beatty, two rookies, what's left of Poutine and the rest put on their galoshes to do battle with 2023's WMSPL Playoff Tournament Finalists.

Typical for an SLF-tainted line up, the Falcons put up zeroes in the first two innings. Jimmos and Co., on the other hand, had zero issues hitting the ball and were up 7-0 before Homie had even finished barfing. This happened.

Finally in the top of the third, the Falcons bats woke up a bit. Future top-of-the-order hitter Skinner led off with a double to spark the rally. Cowboy, already jealous, doubled as well to show he still has some value. Barry Guerrero Jr singled but somehow Cowboy didn't score. One of Poutine's productive outs of the game produced a sac fly to score Cowboy, and SLF's single scored Barry. Singles by Flash and Dr J moved SLF around the bases to put up four for the visitors. The offence was alive!

Unfortunately for the fans of blue, the defence wasn't as alive. Broadway answered with a four-spot of their own to maintain their 7-run lead after three innings.

The fourth and fifth saw more zeroes for the Falcons offence, and Broadway took advantage putting up nine in that span to go up 20-4 after five.

It rained throughout the game, making a field not suited for ball even worse. By the sixth inning, Kelloryn River was beginning to form from the mouth of the third base dugout and make it's way to the pitcher, threatening to swallow Poutine whole and mercifully end his unproductive night. I would venture to guess that no one but Poutine is actually disappointed in his 0-fer.

In the sixth, Skinner led off with his second two-bagger of the game and eventually scored to bring the deficit to only slightly more than two touchdowns. In the bottom half, Broadway clearly took pity on the Falcons and didn't score in a four-up, three-down side.

Let's make a big deal about the meaningless seventh inning, shall we? Yes!

Leading off the top of the seventh with no hope in sight, Dr J walked. Paul, new to the team, got off his brief 0-for-3 schneid and singled. Skinner's third hit of the night scored Dr J. After Cowboy hit into a fielder's choice that didn't result in an out at second (an inside joke for those fans of the OLMBA's 12U A team!), Barry Guerrero Jr's single scored another. Pou's second productive out scored another run and the rally was on. Beatty managed to hobble his way to second on a solid double after nearly decapitating SLF when the persistent rain caused him to lose grip of his bat on a whiff. SLF, brave as always, shook off the near-death experience to single. Flash's single set up Dr J's second walk of the inning and the Falcons had batted around. Paul followed with his second hit of the inning, scoring two in the process. In all, seven Falcons scored in the top of the seventh inning to make a Broadway laugher only slightly less hilarious.

Game Notes: In a miraculous coincidence, the umpire decided after the last out of the game that it was at that exact moment, that the field became too unsafe to play and the second game of the night was rained out... Flash is batting .750 if anyone is keeping track... Backup beer man Flash saved the day with a case of Bud Light (inasmuch as any day can be saved with a case of Bud Light) to drown sorrows post game... And, of course, the rain stopped as soon as the game did.
