The Falcons ALMOST Falcon'd up another one, but ultimately came away with a 20-17 victory over the Vice President's division leader Hanet Heat on Monday night.

If you're prone to seasickness, maybe don't read this recap because you'll be praying to the porcelain gods as we track how this game went back and forth, back and forth, back and... well, you get it.

It began in the top of the first, with the visiting Falcons coming out swinging. Singles by Three-League and The Ringer were scored by singles by Shohei and SLF. Any momentum those runs created was snuffed in short order by Hanet in the bottom of the first, as they posted a MAX6 to take a four-run lead after one.

The Falcons didn't roll over, and busted out in the top of the second with a MAX6 of their own. Singles by Million Dollar Bill and Poutine were followed by call up Mike's FC then Speed Bump waiting, waiting, waiting (stop me if you've experienced THAT), then eventually taking a walk. They were all cashed by Three-League's triple off the left-centre field fence, though two of those runs could have been cut down when Speed Bump and Mike were both in the commitment zone when the relay from short got to the catcher. Thankfully, if you're a Falcons fan, Hanet call-up and league home run leader B-Rad from the Expos was unable to secure the throw and instead of an 8-6-2 twin killing it was a three RBI three-bagger for the Falcons' All Star second baseman. Three-League was immediately scored by The Ringer's sac fly. Re-starting the hit parade, Miner Leaguer smacked a double and Shohei scored him with an RBI single. Singles by SLF and the Taxman capped off a six-run inning to put the Falcons back up by two.

The top of Hanet's order couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the second, sending five to the plate and stranding a runner on third. But the Falcons couldn't twist the knife either in the top of the third, also sending five up, and stranding a runner 65 feet from glory. That left the door open for another lead change, with Hanet putting up another MAX6 highlighted by B-Rod's absolute TANK that settled next to the tennis court. The far one. Like, it cleared the centre field trees, landed, then nestled up to the fence next to the far court. Not a cheapie by any means. It was a sight.

Anyway, Hanet comes out of the third with a 12-8 lead. Back-to-back doubles by The Ringer and Miner Leaguer were cashed by a Shohei groundout and an SLF sacrifice fly to bring the visitors to within two again. Hanet's on-again/off-again offence was off-again for the next few innings, as they put up doughnuts in the fourth, fifth and sixth. That allowed the Falcons to re-take the lead with six in the fifth inning, and four more in the top of the seventh.

That led to an all-too-familiar scene in recent Falcon memory, where they enter the last inning with a pretty good lead just to piss it away. Sometimes they win it anyway, sometimes not.

Thankfully, this night was one of the former. Hanet put up five in the bottom of the seventh with the 85-minute time limit looming, but couldn't squeeze the last three across despite bringing the tying run to the plate.

GAME NOTES: Our umpire seems to have had a look at a ruler lately, as he called several waist-high pitches illegal... That newfound umpiring proficiency didn't translate to, you know, actually leaving his spot behind the plate to make calls, especially on a B-Rod groundout that went the Falcons way and probably shouldn't have, and to a non-tag of Miner Leaguer in the seventh that didn't go the Falcons way and probably should have... It's been a hot minute, hasn't it, Power Rankings fans? The last power rankings were published in September of 2022... have you missed them? Let's get right into it:

#1. TRIPLE PLAY
(28-1-0 Overall; 1st place in the President's Division)

Triple Play's so-far-successful revenge tour '26, despite not being terribly clear on who they're enacting revenge on, continues. With a commanding six-game lead over second place Storm with only 11 games to go, they're sure to cash at least one cheque this year. Winning streaks of twenty one to open the season and their current seven game stretch have been impressive.

#2. FALCONS & STORM (TIE)
(Falcons 23-7-2 Overall; 2nd or 3rd in President's Division. The Crew 22-7; 2nd or 3rd in President's Division; the standing page is confused by ties)

Perennial rivals battling for standings dominance. Storm and the Falcons have been back and forth in the standings all season, and split their season series. Though neither are likely to catch Triple Play to win the division, they've both secured their spots both in the President's Division for 2027, and Friday night byes in the 2026 WMSPL Playoff tournament.

#4. HANET HEAT
(18-11; 1st in Vice President's Division)

Hanet leads the tier-two teams in the league. They are the only team with a winning percentage beginning with a six, and hold a butt-puckering 2.5 game lead over the Isotopes with 11 games to go. If they can keep winning -- and since the OBA season will soon be over bringing back absentee WMBA coaches -- they should also cash a hefty cheque and punch their ticket to both a Friday bye in the playoffs and a promotion to the President's Division for 2027.

#5. ISOTOPES
(15-13-1 Overall; 2nd in Vice President's Division)

Hanet's only worry for the rest of the season seems to be the Isotopes, who are only 2.5 games behind the division lead. The Isotopes are probably correctly guessing their relegation to VP is only a one-year sentence, and they'll be back up top in '27. Don't sleep on this team, they have both the bats and the defence to make a lot of noise on playoff weekend.

THE REST

I told you this was a mini-rankings. Each team in the rest of the league has a winning percentage below .500, so here's how it's looking for them for the last 6 weeks of the season:

#6. THE CREW
The surging Crew have won four straight and are precariously holding onto a spot in the President's Division for '27 despite having lost more games than they've won. Like the Falcons, they lead the league in games played at 32 so they've only got 6 games left to squeak it over the break-even point. They're current 6-seeding puts them in a playoff pool with Broadway and Hanet and really any of those teams could come out of that hellscape at 0-2.

#7. BROADWAY

Broadway gets 7th here by virtue only of having won their last game, whereas Greenthumb didn't. They're fighting with The Crew to avoid relegation in '27 and have a whopping FIVE games in hand on the Crew to help them out. Expect Broadway to be playing on Sunday in the playoffs, as they usually do.

#8. GREENTHUMB

It wouldn't be that much of a surprise if Greenthumb leapfrogs both Broadway and The Crew to leap into the President's Division next year. They have three games in hand on The Crew, but have played two more than Broadway so they'll have to power through the last 11 games to move up. Their current playoff 8-seeding puts them in a group with the Falcons and Isotopes, so, like, 😬.

#9-#12 SUNBELT SURGE, INGLORIOUS BATTERS, COULAS BONE CRUSHERS, THE EXPOS (IN SOME ORDER)

These teams will make up the bulk of the Vice President's Division for 2027 and will look to play spoiler on playoff weekend, where anything can happen, and usually does.
